Freedom from the Past: Reclaiming Your Power

By Niki Schmidt

“I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” – Carl Jung

There is a quiet, powerful truth in these words. They remind us that while the past may leave marks on our lives, it does not get to define who we are. Trauma, loss, and struggle may shape our journey, but they are not the totality of our being. You are not your pain. You are not your story. You are the one who chooses what comes next.

To reclaim your power is to remember that your identity is not bound to the events that tried to break you. It means recognizing the quiet strength that still lives within you, even if it has been hidden beneath years of survival, silence, or self-protection. That strength is real. It is yours. And it is waiting for you to come home to it.

Finding freedom from the past doesn’t mean erasing it. It means loosening its grip. It means allowing yourself to see beyond what happened, and to honor who you are becoming. Detaching from trauma is not denial, it is the act of choosing yourself again and again, no matter how long it takes.

When you begin to look inward with compassion instead of judgment, you unlock a deeper kind of power. The power of choice. The power of presence. The power to grow in the direction of healing and wholeness. You can choose peace over chaos, softness over bitterness, and light over the shadow of what was.

This journey is not about pretending the pain didn’t happen. It’s about rising in spite of it. With awareness, gentleness, and a fierce commitment to your truth, you can walk forward unanchored by the past and rooted in your potential.

You are not what happened to you.            I am not what happened to me.
You are what you choose to become.        I am what you choose to become.
And that is where your freedom begins.    And that is where my freedom begins.
